  • Spring '02 Luncheon Meeting: HIPAA Compliance.  Date: April 11, 2002.  Location: Red Lion Hotel, Colorado Springs, CO.  Featured Guest Speakers: Pat Peterson, General Counsel, Memorial Hospital and John Wyckoff, Compliance Officer, Memorial Hospital.  Pat Peterson and John Wyckoff gave an excellent presentation on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.  They provided the almost 50 attendees with an understanding of the law and its impact on health care organizations.  They described the three aspects of HIPAA: Transactions & Code Sets, Privacy, and Security.  Furthermore, they explained how Memorial Hospital is handling the requirements and is preparing for the compliance deadlines of HIPAA.  This enlightening presentation on a timely, important health care topic was well received by all those present.

  • Summer '02 Luncheon Meeting.  Ethical Decision-Making at the End of Life.  Date: July 18, 2002.  Location: Red Lion Hotel, Colorado Springs, CO.  Featured Guest Speaker: Dr. Malham M. Wakin.  The 25 attendees of this program were overwhelmingly pleased with Dr. Wakin's discussion on Ethical Decision-Making at the End of Life.  Dr. Wakin blended his vast professional expertise with his personal experiences to provide an enlightening presentation.  Dr. Wakin explained some of the underlying principles of ethics in health care.  He also covered the eight Guidelines for End-of-Life Decisions.  These guidelines were develped by the Pikes Peak Forum for Health Care Ethics (PPFHCE), of which Dr. Wakin is a member.  Dr. Wakin was kind enough to give each attendee a copy of "Decisions About the End of Life . . . Help for Those Who Must Decide," a pamphlet developed by the PPFHCE.  

  • Fall '02 Dinner Meeting.  Patient Safety and Healthcare.  Date: September 24, 2002.  Location: Doolittle Hall, Air Force Academy.  Featured Guest Speaker: Michael W. Leonard, M.D., Colorado Permanente Medical Group, P.C.  Among the beautiful backdrop of Doolittle Hall on the Air Force Academy, attendees were treated to a wonderful dinner and an excellent presentation by Dr. Michael Leonard.  Dr. Leonard gave an informative talk on improving patient safety through the study of human factors in healthcare delivery.  Dr. Leonard's presentation was extremely insightful to the varied types of healthcare professionals present.  Dr. Leonard was even able to bring laughter to the crowd, not an easy task!  Seriously, the evening was truly enjoyable thanks to Dr. Leonard.
